After nearly a whole season of fund raising the big day finally came.
At 06:00 on a chilly morning on 29th April we were off. Our theme, The Peppa Pig Tour to Frankfurt (plus all things pink). We had a coach for the whole trip and loaded it up with the tour essentials, crisps, chocolate bars, water, (it’s kids remember). We got to Dover early and managed to get an early crossing, so far, so good. Made our way through France and then into Belgium. We hit the Brussels ring road, very similar to the M25 on it’s worst day. After many hours, we went through The Netherlands and finally Germany. We arrived at our hotel at 10:15pm (17 hours). The boys needed their beds, the adults needed a drink and had one!
Day 1 at the Tournament, First Game, London Irish, bring em on. We only went and scored the first try get in there! We went on to lose 5-1. Second game, French team, RC Pont-a-Mousson. We won 4-2. Third game, Dutch team, Haagsche RC. We won 5-2. We had played the best rugby these lads had ever played, we were on fire!
Day 2, very early start, and we were now in the top half section of the competition First game, Home club SC Frankfurt, We were taken apart. Lost 8-0 Second game, USOMC Paris, more misery, lost 6-0 and they had three girls it the team and one of them scored after palming off one of our best players! We were in melt-down, arguing and blaming each other. Luckily, we had three hours before our next game. After a lot of soul searching, we made our way back to the pitch. Suddenly, they announce they are ahead of schedule and we have to go straight on. Who against! London bloody Irish. Our boys didn’t start too well but gradually built up momentum and finished really strongly we were camped in the corner repeatedly driving for the line. We crossed three times but alas, were held up and went back for a scrum. It was a superb finish even if we did not get our just rewards.
Overall, a fantastic tournament.
